Appointments to Graduate Examination Committees

CEHD PROCEDURES
External committee members (defined as individuals external to the University) may be appointed and must be approved through the following procedures:
- DGS approves external committee member.

DGS/GPC emails Michael DallaValle, Assistant Director of Graduate Education, (mdallava@umn.edu) with name of student, student’s University email address, student ID number, and external committee member to recommend approval (recommendation email less than 100 words). The committee member’s resume/CV should be attached to the e-mail.
- After approval, the GPC should work with their department’s HR Liaison to submit a POI request to obtain an employee ID for the external committee member. If you have questions about POIs or don’t know who your HR Liaison is, please contact Christal Vang at cnvang@umn.edu.
A professor emeritus may be appointed as advisors and/or committee members and must be approved through the following procedures:
- DGS approves professor emeritus to serve as advisor/committee member.
- GPC emails Michael DallaValle, Assistant Director of Graduate Education, (mdallava@umn.edu) with name of student, student’s University email address, student ID number, and professor emeritus to recommend approval (recommendation email less than 100 words).
- The professor emeritus must have an adjunct (POI) appointment in order to serve as an advisor or committee member. Please contact the unit’s assigned HR Generalist for more information on faculty appointments.
All other exceptions to graduate examining committees must be approved through the following procedures:
- DGS approves exception.
