CEHD Civility Initiative

Defining Civility in the College of Education and Human Development

In accord with the University Code of Conduct Section III, Subdivision #10:  Community members have a shared responsibility to ensure a safe, secure, and healthy environment for all University students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

In CEHD a healthy work environment includes a culture that promotes the rights, safety, dignity, and value of every individual:  that is, a culture of civility.  Civility is the process of treating others with respect, dignity, and care. Being civil means being mindful of others, acknowledging their human worth and unique contributions, and acting with respect for others in all interactions.

CEHD values diversity and civility, underscoring the dignity and worth of all, irrespective of dimensions including race/ethnicity, gender, social class, sexual orientation, ability, religion, national origin and citizenship, and even differences of opinion.  Through engaged civility, CEHD supports and encourages the articulation of unique, unpopular, and including unsettling ideas as an integral part of intellectual inquiry.  Engaged civility is a humanizing practice that necessitates open communication, active listening, supporting attainment of human potential, and increasing awareness of how to treat others—those with whom we agree as well as those with whom we disagree.
