Excellence in Academic Advising

Purpose
To recognize exceptional academic advising of undergraduate or graduate students.

Award
Recipient(s) will receive a $1,500 award and a certificate presented at the CEHD Spring Assembly and Recognition event in April. Up to two awards may be presented each year to recognize eligible nominees, at different levels of advising. Example:  A faculty academic adviser and an administrative academic adviser may both be presented an award in the same year if the work group deems that each individual’s work is sufficiently distinctive from the other individual’s. The Honors and Awards Work Group reserves the right to determine, in consultation with the dean, if one or two awards will be presented each year.

Eligibility

Full-time (75% or more) Faculty, contract faculty, P&A staff, or civil service/bargaining unit staff participating in current academic advising roles in CEHD may apply. All nominees should have an active appointment as a CEHD employee as of the due date for this award. An individual may not receive this award more than once; however, previous nominees who have not received the award may be re-nominated. All nominees must be an active employee in good standing at the time of the dossier due date. Nominees must continue as employees in good standing in order to receive the award at the date of the spring assembly in April.

Criteria
Successful nominees should have demonstrated:

  • Excellence in student development (e.g. individual academic advising, fostering diversity, work with student organizations, career development, and other non-classroom contact with individuals or groups of students).
  • Knowledge of academic alternatives as part of personal development.
  • Recognition of the differing needs among students.
  • Action in the students’ best interests.
  • The ability to create a welcoming environment which supports students in their academic progress.

Nomination Documentation
Nomination materials are reviewed by individuals who may not be specialists in the nominee’s field. Successful nominations document how the experiences of the nominee meet the criteria of the award. It is strongly suggested that the letters specifically address the criteria in the order they are listed. Please follow instructions outlined in the Excellence in Academic Advising Nomination Guidelines. [PDF]
